What: Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius
When: Nov. 25 - Dec. 15, 2024
Who’s Impacted: EVERYONE, but esp. Mutable signs & Fire signs
Takeaway: a three-week slowdown of thoughts & plans, this trickster transit pulls its glitchy pranks via tech and communications, provoking a much-needed re-evaluation of what you’re saying, sending, and searching—and why (or if) it even matters at all. The astrological scapegoat of all mental and media meltdowns is officially here. Mercury is now retrograde. Cue the overblown hype. Because let’s be real: the astrology community—both real and quasi—makes a big, HUGE deal out of Mercury Retrograde. This annoys me. In part because it’s not a ~rare~ astrological phenomena; Mercury retrogrades thrice yearly, usually around the same time. But also because as a Gemini, my mind and communications are already loaded with “oops!’ and “uh-oh!” moments. What’s another three weeks of putting the wrong date in an email or muting myself on a Zoom call? Nothing.
In the grand scheme of life, Mercury Retrograde isn’t something to fear or loathe. I already pointed this out in my weekly forecast, but I feel it bears repeating. Because like I also said before: Mercury Rx gets a LOT of hype. Jupiter rules this go-around of Mercury Retrograde, so there’s an initial light-heartedness (and extra added hype) surrounding it. That’s good. Keep that. Because even though I don’t believe in fear-mongering this or any astrological transit, I do have a slight issue with this final Mercury Retrograde of 2024.
Off the bat, the biggest problemo I foresee is: getting to the point. Mercury is logical; as the planetary ruler of Gemini & Virgo, Mercury is ALL about facts, numbers, stats, details, and specificity. Sagittarius is not the most detail-oriented, fact-finding sign; ruled by Jupiter, this mutable fire sign is ALL about the bigger picture, the wide-sweeping vista of an idea/plan, the hunches and hyperboles. We might even go as far as saying Mercury is in love with the literal and the things it can see, whereas Sagittarius is married to its mythic (mental) quests and (sometimes grandiose) metaphors that exist outside the boundaries of sight.
