Uranus Dominant, what it is and what it means for your birth chart
It's pronounced Ur-AH-nus, btw
Happy New Moon in Leo! As I’ve reported in my post about the Leo New Moon, this new moon (and this entire week, really) is as much about Leo as it is about Uranus. That’s because the planet is squaring both the Sun, Venus, and New Moon in Leo, urging a wild reinvention of ourselves and our creativity. I talked a bit about Uranus in that post, but I felt it was prudent to discuss more about this outer planet, specifically its role in astrology and the birth, and—most importantly—what it means to be Uranus Dominant.
So, if you've heard or read about "Uranus Dominant" birth charts (or you’ve just heard a lot about Uranus period), and have been both intrigued and confused, don't worry. I'm laying out everything you need to know about Uranus dominance, from what it is to what it means.
Do you know that the astrological personality is layered? Sundae-like, planetary and zodiac energies pile one on top of the other until there is a cherry on top: the Dominant Planet. Not to be confused with the chart ruler, the Dominant Planet is the planet that—either due to a stellium in the planet’s natural house, or a high number of aspects to other planets—calls the shots in your chart and imbues you with its planetary energies. These energies lay the path of your destiny.
Uranus Meaning in Astrology
Uranus is one of the outer planets in our solar system, and in astrology, it is associated with innovation, rebellion, individuality, and sudden changes. It rules over the zodiac sign Aquarius and is considered a modern ruler of this sign. Uranus represents our need for independence, the desire to break free from societal norms, and the pursuit of intellectual and creative freedom.
Because of Uranus, we are able to transcend normal, everyday thinking. The planet is concerned with the higher mind, and rules over intuition and imagination. Often considered the bohemian’s planet, Uranus wants us to expand our perception, destroy old ideologies, and revolutionize our world and day-to-day lives.
In Astrology, Uranus is the Great Awakener. It's the planet of “Aha!” moments and revelations, and inspires sudden insight or epiphanies about pretty much anything. Sometimes, these epiphanies turn out to be major ones. Like a lightning bolt from heaven, Uranus can strike you with an ingenious idea any time, anywhere.
Role in the Birth Chart and Personality
Uranus's placement in the birth chart indicates where an individual seeks uniqueness, expresses their originality, and craves independence. It governs areas of life where we are likely to be unconventional, forward-thinking, and perhaps even eccentric. The house that Uranus resides in within a birth chart points to the sphere of life that will likely be infused with a touch of rebellion and a drive to push boundaries.
People with prominent Uranus placements in their birth charts (i.e. Uranus Dominant) often possess innovative and inventive minds. They might gravitate towards fields that involve technology, science, or areas that challenge established norms. Their personality traits can include open-mindedness, a strong desire to be different, and a willingness to embrace change with enthusiasm. At times, they might feel a bit restless and crave constant mental stimulation and new experiences.
Uranus in Mythology
The planet Uranus is named after the Greek god Uranus (Οὐρανός), who was the personification of the sky and heavens. In mythology, Uranus was the son and husband of Gaia, the Earth goddess. Their offspring included the Titans and the Cyclopes. Uranus was overthrown by his own son, Cronus (Saturn in Roman mythology), which led to the establishment of the next generation of gods, including Zeus (Jupiter in Roman mythology). The naming of the planet reflects its distant and celestial nature, much like the sky deity it is named after.
In the mythological story, Uranus was overthrown by his son Cronus, who castrated him with a sickle, symbolizing the separation of the sky from the Earth. This act of castration represents the separation of higher, more spiritual realms from the physical and earthly realms. This myth is often interpreted as a metaphor for the breaking away from tradition and established structures, which aligns well with the astrological symbolism of Uranus as a harbinger of change, innovation, and the urge to break free. In astrology, Uranus embodies the essence of this myth by urging us to question norms and embrace our unique identity, much like the Titans who rebelled against the old order. It encourages us to challenge existing paradigms and embrace new ways of thinking and being.
Whew! Now that we know Uranus’ role in astrology and its mythology, it’s time to move onto the good stuff:
