Feeling forgetful, magical, daydreamy, and extra vague? Well, you soon will be. On Fri, Feb. 23, Mercury, the planet of communication, enters foggy mutable water sign Pisces, where it will remain until March 10. So, for the next 16 or so days, expect an influx of poetic thoughts and watercolor words, as you embark on a journey of oceanic imagination and profound empathy. True, it’s only a two-week-long transit, as fleet-footed Mercury is moving through the imaginative water sign at a rapid pace, but my, what a creative, mystical, and inattentive two weeks it will be.

Fun fact: in traditional astrology, the logical, system-loving and hyperactive planet of the mind (Mercury) doesn’t particularly enjoy being in fanciful, idealistic Pisces; in fact, it loathes being in Pisces. That’s because Mercury, who rules the oh-so logical and mentally swift signs Gemini and Virgo, is in detriment and fall in Pisces. Ergo: the planet isn’t operating at its highest function. Mercury is a logic-based problem-solver and schemer, but Pisces is all about creative and emotional ways of thinking. Mercury likes to move quickly, solve for X, and stick to the facts. Pisces tends to be elusive, evasive and vague, as though its perennially living in a watercolor world. It may feel like your right brain and left brain are trying to work together while also working in opposition. Confused? That’s to be expected. Mercury in Pisces lives for that confusing and chaotic way of thinking. (It also lives for surrealism, fantasy, and romance—more on that later.)

During this time, your thoughts, worries and plans are driven by your emotions, and emotions are, if anything, confusing. And evasive. Things are harder to pin down and narrow down, as the siren call of alternative solutions and possibilities is too seductive to resist. Still, this transit isn’t to be feared. In fact, when Mercury dives into the oceans of Pisces, it’s an invitation to get those imaginative and romantic waves churning, to swim in fantastical, quixotic worlds, and disintegrate the boundaries of possibility. This placement is your passport to the dreamy realms of art for art’s sake and intuitive compassion, where words flow like poetry and ideas take flight on the wings of fantasy. With Mercury in Pisces, you’re transported to a world where dreams become reality and imagination knows no bounds.

Sure, Mercury in Pisces might slow your thinking, writing and speaking processes. Facts could feel overwhelming (if not a bit boring). And it’s about ten times more challenging to keep track of the practical things you have to do because your brain keeps floating off into space. But it is in the swampy, dreamy realm of the imagination, in the magical, mystical caverns of creative inspiration where Mercury in Pisces thrives. Thus, this is a fantastic transit to get poetic with your words / writing, start an after-work painting practice, or get back into that novel you started in January. Any and everything that allows you to escape from reality for a spell and unwind the mind is highly encouraged.

So, while you might need to double-check your facts & figures, you’ll at least be able to tap into your creativity with greater ease. And think of how restorative it is to give your brain a break, to stop forcing it to concentrate on mundane reality, and instead let it drift into dreamlands, wade through the depths of your feelings, and swim around facts and figures. (Btw, it’s actually when your brain is thinking in a divergent manner that you are able generate the very best ideas and solutions.) Mercury in Pisces invites you to explore the depths of your psyche, diving into the ocean of emotions and emerging with pearls of wisdom. This transit can help you navigate the waters of communication, and forge connections that transcend language and logic. Of course, how and where Mercury in Pisces will do this depends entirely on your Sun and Rising sign. So, without further ado:
